General information. Definition.
Autoclave tape is a roll of adhesive tape used for professional purposes in central sterile services department (CSSD) during sterilization (heating under high pressure with steam to sterilize products), with indicator ink applied to the outer surface of the tape in a diagonal pattern (usually diagonally oblique stripes), about 1 mm thick, which change color when reaching a certain high temperature. The sterilization inks on the tape belongs to the 1st class of chemical sterilization indicators according to ISO 11140-1.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AUTOCLAVE TAPE AND THE RULES OF ITS APPLICATION
Sterilization indicator ink applied to the tape changes color after exposure to temperatures commonly used in sterilization processes, typically 132-134 C in a steam sterilizer.
Rules for packaging medical products.
Small strips of tape are adhered to items before they are placed in the autoclave. To a greater extent, the tape is used to fix with it packaging with Medina products to be sterilized before placing them in a sterilizer, and packed with special sterilization crepe paper. Fixing the edges of the sterilization packaging with an autoclave sterilization tape prevents premature opening of the sterilization packaging material and also serves as an indicator. Allowing distinguishing already sterilized packages from those still to be sterilized
Tape is similar to masking tape, but more adhesive and more durable to allow it to stick in the hot, humid conditions of the autoclave. One such tape has a diagonal repetitive marking containing ink that changes color (usually from beige to black) when heated.
It is important to note that the presence of autoclave tape that has changed color on the item does not guarantee sterility of the product, as the ink on the tape changes color only upon exposure. The ink on the tape belongs to the 1st class of chemical sterilization indicators according to ISO 11140-1. For steam sterilization, the entire item must completely reach and maintain 134 C for 3-4 minutes with proper exposure to steam to ensure proper sterilization.
