According to WTO statistics, China, Germany and the US are the world’s largest traders in critical medical products to combat COVID-19.

The three major economies of China, Germany and the US together accounted for about 31 percent of global trade in goods in 2020, and an even higher 41 percent of medical products critical to the fight against COVID-19. The top 10 economies in this category account for about 71.6% of the global supply of critical medical products to combat COVID-19.

Among them, China’s exports of key medical products to combat COVID-19 almost tripled from $38 billion in 2019 to $105 billion in 2020, with the share of products rising from 12.6 percent in 2019 to about 26.7 percent in 2020. That made China the largest exporter of such products in 2020.

Another economy that saw a significant increase in exports of medical products in 2020 was Malaysia, with an annual growth rate of 52%.

Meanwhile, the value of key medical products exported by the US to fight COVID-19 fell by 0.7%, which the WTO said could be due to increased domestic demand.
